Robin Hood's cave

Scrambling up through the sandstone outcrop, you'll find what locals claim is one of Robin Hood's old hideouts - though let's be honest, half of Nottinghamshire makes similar claims. This particular cave sits high above the surrounding woodland, offering proper views across the Sherwood Forest area toward Newark.

The cave itself isn't much to write home about - a shallow depression in the rock face that could shelter maybe three people at a push. But the climb up is well worth it for the viewpoint alone. On a clear day you can see for miles across the rolling countryside, and it's a cracking spot for photos.

Families with older kids will enjoy the short but steep scramble, though it's not suitable for pushchairs or anyone with mobility issues. The whole visit takes about an hour including the walk from the nearest car park. Robin Hood enthusiasts will love adding this to their Sherwood Forest pilgrimage, even if the historical connections are rather tenuous.

The National Trust's Clumber Park itself is just down the road and makes for a good combination - proper facilities there plus this wilder scramble for contrast.
