Roberton Motte

A grass-covered mound rising abruptly from the flat landscape near Biggar, Roberton Motte is one of those sites that rewards curiosity more than casual passing. This is a Norman motte - a man-made earthwork from the 11th or 12th century, basically a defensive stronghold built in the age when wooden palisades and quick fortifications meant power.

What you actually get is a decent climb up to a proper vantage point. The mound itself is perhaps thirty feet high, surrounded by its original ditch, and from the top you can see why the Normans picked this spot - total command of the Biggar area. It's accessible year-round and free, which makes it an easy addition to a broader South Lanarkshire walk.

This isn't a place for crowds or lengthy visits. Budget forty minutes, maybe an hour if you're the type to stand about thinking about medieval military strategy. Kids over eight will probably find the climb interesting; younger ones might lose interest once they've scrambled up. History buffs and archaeology enthusiasts will get genuine value from seeing the earthwork's form intact.

If you're based at Mount View Caravan Park two or so miles away, it's worth an afternoon leg-stretch. Pair it with walking round Biggar itself rather than treating it as a standalone attraction. The Lowland landscape here is quiet and rolling - not dramatic, but genuine. Go when it's not waterlogged.
