Roberton Law isn't a dramatic mountain - it's a stubby, grassy hill that rises about 400 metres above the rolling farmland near Biggar. But what it lacks in altitude it makes up for with views that stretch across the Lowlands on a clear day, and the walk itself is straightforward enough that you're not wrestling with your OS map halfway up.

The ascent takes about forty minutes from the car park, following a clear path through moorland and rough grass. It's not steep enough to knacker you, but it's not a stroll either. The summit is basically a flat plateau with a trig point, where you can see south into England and north towards the Southern Uplands proper. On a grey day it feels a bit anonymous, but when the weather's kind, it's worth the effort.

This works best for family walkers who want a proper outing without needing to start at dawn. Kids aged eight or so upwards will manage it fine if they're used to walking. It's also decent for anyone camping at Mount View Caravan Park - you're only about four miles away, making it a good afternoon option before heading back for tea.

The real draw here is simplicity. No fees, no faff, just a hill that does what it says. Allow two to three hours including a sit-down at the top. Don't come expecting drama or isolation - you might well bump into other walkers - but come expecting a proper Lowlands walk that actually feels like you've earned the view.
