RNLI Salcombe 1916 Centenary

The lifeboat station at Salcombe has been saving lives since 1916, and there's something properly moving about standing where generations of crews have launched into rough water to pull people from the sea. It's a working station, not a museum piece, so you're looking at a functional building rather than some grand heritage attraction - but that's rather the point. The volunteers who crew the modern lifeboats operate from here, and you can feel the weight of that responsibility in the place.

You'll get the most from a visit if maritime history or coastal rescue work genuinely interests you. It's not the sort of spot where kids will burn two hours of energy, but families passing through Kingsbridge on the way to the coast will find it worth a quick stop. Ring ahead to check opening times and what's accessible - staffing at lifeboat stations can be variable, and they're often called out on shouts.

Free to look around outside, though donations are always welcomed by the RNLI. Allow twenty minutes unless you catch someone who'll talk you through the boats and kit, in which case you could happily spend longer. The station sits right on Salcombe's estuary, so the walk down is half the appeal - proper South Devon scenery. If you're camping at Wilton Farm or Karrageen, both within a few miles, this pairs well with a broader coastal walk. The position alone - overlooking that narrow channel where so many rescues have happened - makes it worth the detour from Kingsbridge.
