Riverside Park

The River Coln winds through this stretch of Wiltshire countryside like it's got all the time in the world, and Riverside Park gives you proper access to it without fighting through private land. It's a working nature reserve rather than a manicured attraction - you get meadows, riverbanks, and the occasional heron if you're lucky enough and quiet enough to spot one. The paths are straightforward, the vegetation changes with the seasons, and there's genuine woodland alongside the water.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a tick-box visit - you need to actually move through it, follow the river, see what birds are about. Families with young kids might manage an hour, but if you've got teenagers or adults who actually enjoy a proper walk, you could easily spend two to three hours here. Bring binoculars if you're any good at identifying birds; otherwise just enjoy the quiet.

It's free, which is refreshing. No visitor centre, no cafe, no gift shop - just the river and the land around it. Fairford is just down the road if you need supplies or a decent lunch after. If you're staying at Great Farm, you're barely twenty minutes away, making it a decent morning or afternoon outing without eating into the day. Second Chance and Faringdon Grange are slightly further out, but still accessible for a half-day adventure. Honestly, it's the sort of place you'll overlook on a map and stumble upon by accident - which is precisely why it's worth a proper visit.
