Riverhill Himalayan Gardens

Steep hillsides carpeted in rhododendrons and azaleas in spring - that's the first thing that hits you at Riverhill. It's genuinely surprising how Himalayan the whole thing feels, given you're only a few miles from Tunbridge Wells town centre. The gardens drop down a proper ravine with a river running through it, which is precisely why the Victorians started planting rare species here in the first place. You get towering conifers, specimen trees that must be pushing 150 years old, and these extraordinary rhododendron groves that absolutely stop you in your tracks when they're flowering - usually late April through May.

Walking here takes proper effort. This isn't a gentle stroll around a flat garden; you're constantly going up or down. Families with young children might manage an hour poking around the lower sections, but serious walkers and plant enthusiasts will need a good three hours minimum to do it justice. Spring is obviously peak season, though autumn colours through the woodland are equally absorbing if you miss the rhododendrons.

The gardens sit well as a centrepiece for a larger park-based stay. Apple Acres Caravan & Camping Farm is just five miles down the road, and Glamping at Honnington Farm slightly further - both mean you can use Riverhill as your cultural anchor without being miles from proper facilities. Admission details can be checked directly with the gardens, but the terrain and tree work involved suggest there's likely a modest entry fee.
