Carroty Wood

The name alone tells you what to expect from Carroty Wood - it's a proper working forest just outside Tunbridge Wells where the trees genuinely do have that russet quality, especially when the light hits them right. Walking through here feels like stepping into something genuine rather than manicured, which makes a pleasant change from the well-trodden tourist routes.

It's best suited to walkers who want a quieter outing and families with kids old enough to handle uneven ground without complaint. The woodland offers decent trails without the crowds you'd get at more famous spots, though it's not a dramatic landscape - more understated Kent than rolling drama. Allow a couple of hours if you want to explore properly rather than just dash through.

This works particularly well if you're camping at one of the nearby farms. Apple Acres and Glamping at Honnington Farm are both close enough that you could easily spend a morning here before heading elsewhere, or use it as a breather between bigger activities. The Hop Farm and Gatehouse Wood Country Park nearby give you other options if the weather turns or the kids need something different.

Timing-wise, autumn is lovely when the carroty tones are strongest, though spring brings decent woodland flowers. There's no obvious visitor infrastructure that I could find, so come prepared for a proper forest walk rather than expecting facilities. Free access seems likely but worth checking locally in Tunbridge Wells before you go - it's the kind of place that works on assumption rather than signage.
