Wilmot Hill

The walk up Wilmot Hill rewards you with proper views across the Weald - the kind that make the climb worthwhile on a clear day. It's not a mountain, mind you. From Tunbridge Wells, you're looking at a modest peak that delivers character over drama, but that's rather the point of the High Weald.

Getting up there takes most people between thirty and forty-five minutes depending on fitness and which route you take. The terrain is woodland paths and open grassland - nothing technical, just a steady push uphill. On the way you'll pass through beech and oak woodland that's genuinely pleasant, and the views from the top stretch across the Weald towards the South Downs. Worth having a picnic up there if the weather holds.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with younger kids might find it a bit much if they're after a quick tick-box outing, but older children who can handle a proper walk will enjoy the sense of achievement. History buffs won't find much to sink their teeth into - it's more about landscape than anything archaeological.

The nearest holiday parks - Thriftwood and Gatehouse Wood are both within five miles - make this a natural addition to a week's walking in the area. Combine it with other local peaks and you've got yourself a decent little rambling itinerary. No facilities on the hill itself, so bring water. Free to walk, obviously.
