About River Shiel
Walkers get the best out of this. There's decent riverside walking along the banks, and the paths here aren't crowded the way they are at some of the better-known lochs. The fishing folk come here too - salmon runs in season, apparently, though I didn't see anyone hauling in trophy catches on my visit. The light's extraordinary in late afternoon when the sun catches the water between the hills.
It's free to explore, naturally. Allow an hour or two for a decent walk along the riverbank, maybe longer if you fancy heading further up towards Loch Shiel itself. Early morning or just before dusk are your best bets - the midges are less vicious and the whole place feels less like a postcard.
Glenshiel Campsite sits barely a tenth of a mile away, which makes this brilliant for anyone basing themselves there. It's the kind of spot that rewards actually getting out and walking rather than just snapping a photo from the car park. Kyle is your nearest proper town, about 20 minutes south if you need supplies.
