About River Rede
Walkers get the most from it. The stretches around Otterburn offer decent riverside paths that don't demand fell-walking experience, though your calves will know about it if you head upstream towards the moorland sections. The water itself moves well - you'll see it properly churning over rocks in places - and the banks are lined with riverside woodland that shifts from densely forested to open moorland depending which direction you head.
You won't need to pay anything, and there's no grand opening hours because it's just there, doing its thing. Allow a couple of hours minimum for a decent walk, longer if you fancy exploring the upper reaches. Spring and early summer are best - the water's high enough to be dramatic, and the light through the trees is genuinely lovely without being soppy about it.
If you're staying at Border Forest Holiday Park just up the road, the Rede makes an excellent half-day excursion that breaks up the park routine. It's the kind of place you go to actually see Northumberland rather than visit an attraction. The river doesn't perform for visitors. It just is.
