River Nairn Walk

The River Nairn cuts through some proper lovely Highland terrain, and this walk trails alongside it for a good stretch. You're looking at a riverside path that winds through native woodland - birch, alder, the works - with the water doing its thing alongside. It's gentle enough that you won't need proper hiking boots, but there are enough ups and downs to keep it interesting.

Walkers will absolutely get the most from this one. Families with kids aged six or up can handle it without complaint, though toddlers in buggies will struggle on the rougher bits. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars - you'll spot herons, dippers, and if you're lucky, ospreys diving for fish.

What makes it work is that it's close to Nairn itself, so it doesn't feel like a major expedition. You can do anywhere from a forty-minute loop to a couple of hours depending on which direction you fancy and how often you stop for photos. The river's the real draw here - it's genuinely beautiful without being showy about it.

If you're staying at Barrow Campsite, this is basically on your doorstep and costs nothing. Go when the weather's settled and the water's not in spate - autumn's particularly good, with the light hitting the trees nicely. Summer's busier but warmer if you're bringing the kids. Skip it if you're expecting dramatic waterfalls or proper wilderness; this is Highland scenery for people who like their nature accessible.
