River Lune

The River Lune slides through Lancashire like it's got nowhere to be in particular, and that's rather the point. This isn't a lake in the traditional sense - it's a river valley that opens up into wider pools and meanders, creating those proper scenic spots where the water actually sits still long enough to reflect the fells. The best bit is Crook O'Lune, the famous viewpoint just outside Lancaster where the river makes a dramatic loop through the landscape. You get the full panorama from up there, especially in golden hour when the light goes soft across the water.

Walkers will find their people here. The river paths are forgiving enough for a family afternoon but rewarding for anyone wanting to stretch their legs properly. The valley floor stays relatively flat - you're not scrambling up steep banks - though getting down to the water's edge depends which bit you choose. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're actually walking it, longer if you want to faff about with photography or a picnic.

It's genuinely free. Just park sensibly and go. Spring's lovely when the banks fill with colour, but honestly, any season works. The rain doesn't ruin it - if anything, the water level rises dramatically and looks properly moody.
