The River Itchen flows through Winchester like the town's own personal ribbon, and honestly, it's one of those places that rewards a slow wander rather than a rushed tick-box visit. You get the classic chalk stream experience here - proper clear water, watercress beds, and if you're lucky, a flash of trout or a heron stalking the shallows. The river runs right through the centre of Winchester, which means you can duck down from the high street and suddenly find yourself in something that feels genuinely removed from the shops and crowds.

Walkers will get the most out of this. The towpath stretches both directions from town, and there's something deeply absorbing about following the water upstream - the banks are lush, the pace is gentle, and the light filtering through the trees changes every fifty yards. It's free, naturally, and you can spend as little as twenty minutes pottering about or half a day if you venture further afield towards the villages upstream.

Best visited spring through early autumn when the light's good and the water level's reasonable. Winter can be muddy and overwrought. If you're staying at The Spinney Caravan Park just outside town, the river makes an excellent morning or early-evening excursion before heading back to cook dinner. It's not a destination in itself - you can't eat here, there's nowhere to shelter - but as part of a Winchester day, it's absolutely worth the diversion. Particularly good if you've got restless kids who need a different kind of space.
