River Darent Walk

The River Darent Walk takes you along one of Kent's quieter waterways, threading through woodland and open meadow just south of Sevenoaks. It's a proper lowland river - not dramatic, but genuinely lovely on a clear day when the water reflects the trees overhead and you've got space to think.

This is walker territory. The path follows the river for a decent stretch, manageable for families with older kids or anyone after a gentle two to three-hour amble. You'll see kingfishers if you're lucky - I spotted one darting between the reeds - and the woodland sections feel properly isolated despite being barely half an hour from Sevenoaks town centre.

The route works well as a break from staying at nearby Thriftwood Country Park. If you're there for a few days, it beats another afternoon at the playground. The walk is free and accessible most times, though the ground gets waterlogged after heavy rain, so pick your moment. Spring and early autumn are when it feels best - fewer midges than summer, and the light's sharper.

Won't blow your mind if you're used to dramatic river valleys elsewhere, but for a half-day outing combining fresh air with actual wildlife watching, it delivers. Don't expect facilities - bring water. The nearest proper amenities are back in Sevenoaks itself, so plan accordingly. Best visited midweek if you want the path to yourself.
