River Cherwell

The Cherwell is one of those rivers that slips under the radar until you actually spend time on it. This isn't a dramatic water feature - it's a gentle, meandering stretch that winds through Oxfordshire countryside just outside Kidlington, ideal for anyone after a proper walk without the crowds. Most people who visit are either paddling a canoe, fishing, or simply walking the towpath for an hour or two. The water itself is clear enough on good days, and the banks are lined with willows and reeds that attract herons and the odd kingfisher if you're patient.

Walkers get the best out of it. The towpath is flat and straightforward, manageable for families with pushchairs or older kids who don't fancy hills. You'll see genuine country life here - cattle grazing, the occasional fisherman set up for the day - without feeling like you're in a theme park version of the Cotswolds. Allow two to three hours for a decent walk either direction. It's free, as most river walks are, and there's no faffing about with opening hours or tickets.
