Ritson's Force

The waterfall itself isn't enormous, but it's genuinely lovely once you've walked far enough into Holmrook's hinterland to reach it. Ritson's Force drops in a proper cascade over dark rock, and there's something about the way the water catches the light that makes the effort worthwhile. The walk takes you through woodland that feels properly remote even though you're only a stone's throw from Holmrook.

It's ideal terrain for families who don't mind a moderate hike of an hour or so. Kids who are keen on splashing about in rock pools will get a kick out of it, though the water's usually freezing. Serious walkers might find it a bit of a detour rather than a destination in itself, but couple it with other walks in the area and it fits nicely into a longer day out.

There's no visitor centre or facilities here - it's just you, the water, and the Lake District's quiet side. The path is muddy when wet, so decent boots are non-negotiable. Going early on a weekday saves you from the weekend scramble, and autumn light through the trees is particularly good for photos.

If you're camping at Fisherground Campsite nearby, this is absolutely on your list. The waterfall works well as a morning walk before heading somewhere else, rather than a full day's occupation. Access is free, obviously, and you'll need to be reasonably fit - it's not flat.
