Ripple Sand

The sand here shifts with every tide, which is rather the point. Ripple Sand, just off Kingsbridge in South Devon, is one of those beaches that changes character depending on when you arrive - sometimes it's a proper wide expanse, other times the water claims most of it back. That's exactly what makes it interesting if you're the type who likes a bit of unpredictability.

It's a small beach, frankly. You won't find the sweeping golden stretches of somewhere like Thurlestone further along the coast. What you get instead is a quieter, more local feel - the kind of place where families from Kingsbridge pop down for an hour rather than making it their destination for the day. The sand itself is fine and pale, backed by a modest foreshore that doesn't amount to much in the way of facilities or drama.

Best visited at mid to low tide if you want actual beach to walk on. High tide? Considerably less appealing. It's free, as most of Devon's beaches are, and there's no formal entrance or opening hours to worry about. Families with small children might get a decent paddle in if the conditions are right, though it's not particularly sheltered.

If you're staying at one of the nearby camping spots - Wilton Farm Camping is closest at 2.6 miles - Ripple Sand works as a quick morning visit before heading to bigger attractions. On its own merits, it's pleasant enough but not worth detouring specifically for unless you're already in Kingsbridge and fancy a bit of sand between your toes.
