Ridding Wood

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Ridding Wood sits just outside Kendal and delivers exactly what you'd hope for from a Cumbrian forest - tall trees, decent paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you left the car park in the first place. The wood runs through a small valley with enough variation in terrain to keep things interesting without turning it into an endurance test. You'll find native broadleaves here, which means the canopy changes character through the seasons. Spring brings bluebells that carpet the forest floor, while autumn turns the whole place into shades of copper and gold.

This works best for walkers wanting a break from the high fells or families with primary school-age kids who need a couple of hours of proper mucking about in trees. It's not wildly dramatic - no waterfalls or viewpoints that'll make you gasp - but it's genuine woodland, and that counts for something. Allow 90 minutes to two hours depending on how you meander, and go early on weekends if you value silence.

If you're based at The Ashes Caravan Park or Two Acre Glamping Pods - both excellent bases - Ridding Wood fills a gap between bigger attractions nicely. It's close enough for a morning sortie before heading to Windermere or the Langdales, but substantial enough not to feel like a token walk. Free access, no facilities to speak of, so bring what you need. Best visited after good weather when paths dry out.
