Rhoscolyn Beacon

Standing 15 metres tall on Anglesey's rugged coastline, this whitewashed beacon cuts a stark figure against the wild Welsh sky. The tower dates back to 1809 and served as a crucial navigation aid for ships navigating the treacherous waters around Holy Island.

Walkers and history enthusiasts will find this the perfect excuse for a proper coastal ramble from Pentre village. The path winds along dramatic clifftops with views across to Ireland on clear days - though the Welsh weather rarely plays that nicely. It's free to visit, naturally, being an outdoor monument, though you can't climb inside the beacon itself. Allow a good two hours if you're walking the full coastal loop, less if you just want to bag a photo and head back. Best visited when the wind's not trying to blow you into the Irish Sea.
