Rhaeadr Du Waterfalls

The walk to Rhaeadr Du is steep, muddy, and absolutely worth doing on a clear day. This waterfall - tucked away in the hills above Dolgellau - isn't some grand cascade you'll see from a layby. You have to earn it, which is precisely why it feels special.

The path climbs through woodland before opening out into moorland, and when you finally round the bend, there's the fall itself tumbling down dark rock. The name means Black Waterfall in Welsh, and you'll understand why when you see it - the water drops against such dark stone it looks almost theatrical. On a grey day it's moody; on a sunny one it's genuinely photogenic.

This is walker territory. Allow two hours return, wear proper boots (not trainers), and don't attempt it after heavy rain when the path becomes a stream. Families with small kids might find it too much - the incline is genuine and the terrain unforgiving.

It's free and open year-round. Go early morning in summer to avoid the post-breakfast crowds. Winter walks are quieter but muddier.

If you're camping at Torrent Walk Campsite or Llwyn yr Helm (the latter gets consistently strong reviews), this makes a brilliant half-day excursion. Dolgellau itself is worth a mooch beforehand - proper market town with decent tea rooms. The waterfall isn't a lazy detour, but if you've got legs and aren't afraid of getting muddy, it beats most of what passes for tourist attractions around here.
