Rexy Barrow

A Bronze Age barrow sits on the edge of Exmoor near Lynton, commanding views across moorland that haven't changed much in three thousand years. It's the sort of place you stumble upon while out walking rather than plan a trip around, though if you're based at Lynmouth Holiday Retreat it's easily reachable on foot.

What you get is an earthen mound, weathered by centuries of wind and rain, with the kind of raw archaeology that doesn't need interpretation boards to feel significant. Stand on top and the landscape rolls away toward the coast - proper atmospheric on a clear day, atmospheric in a different way when mist rolls in off the moor.

History types will appreciate the Bronze Age connection; families with younger kids might find it a bit abstract unless you've already got them interested in prehistoric sites. Walkers should absolutely include it in a longer route across Exmoor - it's not a destination in itself but a compelling waypoint. The walk from Lynton takes roughly forty minutes depending on your pace and exact route.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I could find, so come prepared for weather. Free to visit, needless to say. Best in autumn or spring when the moor looks dramatic but you're not melting in heat or frozen solid. If you're doing a few days around Lynmouth, combine it with coastal walks and the Exmoor scenery rather than treating it as a standalone trip. The real appeal is context - one ancient monument among dozens on these hills.
