Rewfield Copse

Walking into Rewfield Copse feels like stepping through a proper doorway into Sussex's quieter side. This small woodland sits just outside Dorking, the kind of place locals know but most visitors miss entirely. The trees are dense enough to feel properly enclosed - you lose the sound of the road within minutes - but it's nowhere near vast enough to get lost in. More of a pocket forest than an expedition, really.

It's a straightforward woodland walk through mixed trees, with paths that aren't particularly challenging. The copse works best for anyone wanting a genuine bit of greenery without committing to a full day in the Surrey hills. Families with younger children will manage it easily; older kids might find it a touch brief unless they're keen on spotting woodland wildlife. Walkers using it as a pit stop between longer routes won't feel cheated, but it's not the sort of place you'll spend hours pottering about.

There's no entrance fee or formal facilities that I'm aware of - it's simply accessible woodland. Twenty minutes to half an hour is a realistic walk depending on how slowly you move. The best approach is treating it as a complement to a park-based holiday rather than a main event. Riverside Farm sits five miles away and makes a solid base; Sussex Topiary Campsite and Slinfold Caravan Club are both within easy driving distance. Bundle this into a morning before heading elsewhere, or use it as a cooling-off spot if the campsites get too busy on a hot day. It's unpretentious and does exactly what it says on the tin.
