Reigate Heath

The heath spreads out proper wild for somewhere this close to Surrey's commuter belt - it's one of those places that feels genuinely untamed despite being barely thirty minutes from London. Reigate Heath is open common land, which means you're free to wander the gorse and heather with no fences stopping you, no entry fee, nothing. The windmill sits at the top like a landmark you can spot from half the countryside, and it's worth the walk just for that alone.

Historically it's where locals fought to keep the land from being enclosed back in the day, and that defiant spirit still hangs about. You get proper views across the Weald from the higher bits, and on a clear morning it's the sort of place that reminds you why people moved to Surrey in the first place - before the traffic anyway. The sandy, acidic soil means heathland plants thrive here: silver birch, bracken in autumn, the lot.

Walkers will find it most rewarding. There's no grand circuit or marked trail, just open land to explore on foot, and that freedom is exactly what makes it good. Kids might get restless without a destination, though spotting the windmill works as motivation enough. Combine it with Henfold Lakes just down the road near Tadworth - that's got more structure if you need it, plus the lakes themselves.

Go early, go weekdays if you can, and bring proper boots. The sand gets churned up after rain, and the gorse can be thick enough to redirect you.
