Reigate Castle Grounds

The castle itself is long gone - what remains is a decent stretch of Norman earthworks and a Victorian folly that frankly looks better from a distance. But that's not really the point of coming here. The grounds sprawl across a proper chunk of parkland just above Tadworth, and it's a genuine spot for a wander rather than a tick-box heritage visit.

You get motte-and-bailey remains if you care about 11th-century fortifications, plus views across the Weald that on a clear day make the short walk worthwhile. The grounds feel genuinely lived-in - locals with dogs, families spreading out on the grass, nobody pretending it's something grander than it is. The Victorian tower (built much later, obviously) gives you something to aim for if you've got restless kids in tow, though it's less impressive close up than you'd hope.

This works brilliantly as a half-hour detour between other activities rather than a destination in itself. Free to access, no facilities to speak of, so bring a picnic if you're staying locally. If you're based at Henfold Lakes or Cowroom Glamping nearby, it's an easy morning out - the kind of place where you can let your mind wander while the children burn off energy on open ground. Go on a weekday if possible; weekends bring the full complement of Tadworth's family brigade, which takes the edge off the peace.
