Reeves' Firs

A thick stand of conifers on the Marlborough Downs, Reeves' Firs is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. The trees are tall, densely packed, and genuinely atmospheric - walking through feels like stepping into somewhere altogether quieter than the surrounding chalk downland. It's not a manicured woodland with signage and benches. It's just forest, proper forest, which some people will find brilliant and others will find a bit too dark and samey.

Walkers get the most from this one. The tracks through the trees are straightforward enough, though muddy after rain, and it makes a decent loop if you're rambling across the Downs from Marlborough. Families with young kids might find an hour here sufficient before restlessness sets in - there's no destination point, no clearing with a view, just trees and more trees. But for a woodland walk that doesn't require a visitor centre or car park facilities, it does the job.

The nearest proper base is Marlborough, about three miles away. Staying at Ridgeway Campsite or Hillview Park puts you well positioned for combining this with wider Downs walking - you could easily string together a proper day out hitting several woodland patches and the open chalk hills. Totteridge Farm Camping Pods, slightly further out, is also worth considering if you want somewhere with a bit more comfort than a standard pitch. Best visited autumn or early spring when the ground's firm and you're not wading through summer bracken.
