Redefest Site (Former Brigantium Site)

The ground beneath your feet at Redefest used to matter to the Romans. This is where Brigantium once stood - a fort that guarded the Dere Street supply line deep in Northumberland, miles from anywhere that feels remotely civilised now. Walking the site near Otterburn, you're looking at earthworks and fragments rather than reconstructed walls, which honestly makes it more rewarding if you've got any archaeology background.

What you actually get is the chance to read the landscape properly. The fort's outline is still visible if you know what to look for - those subtle rises and dips in the field that most people walk straight past. It's not Instagram-friendly the way some Roman sites are, but that's rather the point.
