Redcrag Tarn

High moorland water with proper views - that's Redcrag Tarn. It sits on the fells near Penrith, a dark mirror of a lake that rewards anyone willing to get boots muddy to reach it. The walk in takes you through rough fell terrain, so it's not a five-minute stroll from the car park, but once you're up there the sense of isolation makes it worth every squelchy step.

You'll see the tarn itself - surprisingly deep for its size, with heather and bilberry moorland rolling away in all directions. On a clear day you've got proper fell views stretching across the Lake District. On a grey one, which is half the time up here, it's moody and atmospheric in that way only exposed water can be. Walkers and fell types absolutely get it. Families with small children might find the approach a bit rough underfoot, and honestly, there's not much to *do* once you're there beyond stand about and admire it - so allow an hour or so if the weather's decent.

Free to visit, naturally. Go when the fells are dry enough - late spring through early autumn is most sensible. Winter and early spring tend to be boggy and miserable. The nearby holiday parks at Ullswater and Waterfoot work well as bases if you're planning a proper fell week. Ullswater's the more family-focused option at 5 miles out, but Waterfoot's ratings are genuinely excellent if you want something slicker. Either way, Redcrag Tarn fits nicely into a bigger walking itinerary rather than being a standalone trip.
