Red Well

Red Well is a small lake tucked into the Northumberland landscape near Haltwhistle, and it's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a pilgrimage to. The water itself has a distinctive rust-coloured tint - hence the name - caused by iron deposits in the surrounding geology. It's peaceful, quiet, and genuinely undeveloped, which makes it rather refreshing.

The main draw here is a straightforward walk around the water's edge. It's not demanding or long, so families with younger kids won't hit a wall of complaints halfway round. Walkers passing through the area might add it to their route without losing hours, and anyone with an interest in local geology will find the iron-staining genuinely interesting to look at. The setting is proper moorland - open, windswept, and honestly quite atmospheric when the light's right.

Bring a packed lunch if you want to linger. There's no café or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn when the paths aren't boggy and the weather's less likely to turn on you halfway round.

For a park-based holiday, Haltwhistle Camping and Caravanning Club Site and Panoramic Pods are both within easy reach - around five miles away. Red Well works as a morning or afternoon outing rather than a full-day destination, but it's the sort of proper, low-key spot that breaks up a holiday nicely without any fuss.
