Milecastle 38

The crumbling stone foundations of a Roman fort tucked into the Northumberland moorland are what remain of Milecastle 38, one of the best-preserved examples along Hadrian's Wall. It's essentially a small fortified gatehouse, about 40 metres square, that once controlled movement across the wall itself - soldiers stationed here would have checked and processed anyone passing through. You can still make out the defensive ditch to the north and the foundations of internal buildings if you're willing to spend time reading the ground.

This is squarely territory for history enthusiasts and Hadrian's Wall completists. Casual family visitors might find themselves underwhelmed by what amounts to a grassy field with low stone outlines, though if your kids have been excited by Roman forts, the tangibility of actually standing where soldiers once stood can hit differently. The walk here from Haltwhistle isn't arduous, but the site itself demands patience and imagination - you're reconstructing a story from rubble.

Access is free and unrestricted. Most people allow 30-45 minutes, though you could spend longer if you're photographing or sketching. Spring and autumn light across the moorland makes it worth timing right. The site sits within easy reach of Hadrian's Wall Campsite just 3 miles away, and the broader wall corridor means you can chain together several forts in a single day's walking if you're serious about it. Worth the trip if you're already exploring the wall; perhaps less so if it's your sole reason to be in the area.
