About Steel Rigg
Historically minded walkers will find this unmissable. The wall section here is genuinely intact in places - you can see how it was constructed, understand its defensive logic. Families with older kids will get something out of it, though very young children might find the walk a bit dull and the view abstract. The climb from the car park isn't brutal, but it's exposed and feels proper moorland.
It's free and open all hours - it's just landscape. Allow thirty minutes to an hour if you're stopping to photograph and soak it in. The nearby campsites at Hadrian's Wall and Herding Hill Farm make this an obvious addition to a park-based holiday in the area. Combine it with walking sections of the wall itself, or head into Haltwhistle for supplies and a meal. Winter light here is extraordinary but the weather can turn foul quickly. Spring and autumn are probably sweetest.
