Red Hill

The highest point in Greater London sits just outside Leatherhead, and it's properly underwhelming in the best possible way. Red Hill reaches 136 metres - hardly Alpine - but the walk up through the woods to the summit is pleasant enough, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks like Warren Farm or Horsley. You won't find a tourist information board or a café at the top. What you get instead is a quiet spot with modest views across the Weald, the kind of place where dog walkers outnumber sightseers by about ten to one.

It's free to visit and takes maybe 20 minutes from the car park to reach the actual peak. The real charm is in the walk itself rather than the destination - woodland paths, the occasional glimpse of the Surrey Hills beyond. Families with younger kids might find it a bit anticlimactic after the climb, though it's gentle enough that little legs won't complain too much. History types won't find much of interest here either. This is proper local territory, the sort of place people from Leatherhead use for an afternoon stretch rather than a planned expedition.

If you're based at Chessington World of Adventures Resort or any of the camping sites dotted around Weybridge and Walton on Thames, Red Hill works as a quiet morning outing before heading to more structured attractions. Don't build a holiday around it. Do include it if you're already in the area and fancy a walk that doesn't demand much from you.
