Reculver Country Park

Those twin towers standing sentinel on the Kent coast near Canterbury aren't some medieval folly - they're what's left of a 12th-century church, and walking out to them across Reculver Country Park is proper atmospheric stuff. The park itself sprawls across 40 hectares of clifftop grassland and shingle beach, with the towers dominating the view from almost every angle.

You're basically here for the walk and the history. The towers draw you like a magnet, and reaching them rewards you with views across the Thames estuary that stretch for miles on a clear day. The beach is shingly rather than sandy, but it's dramatic - especially when the tide's out and you can pick your way along the shore beneath the cliffs. It's the kind of place where walkers genuinely thrive, though families with young kids might find the shingle tiresome after 20 minutes.

The park is free to access, and you can spend anything from an hour to half a day here depending on whether you're just doing a quick tower visit or tackling the longer coastal path routes. Bring proper shoes - the shingle's relentless on trainers. The cliffs erode steadily, so the landscape shifts year to year, which gives the place a slightly precarious edge.

If you're based at Seaview Holiday Park or any of the surrounding campsites within five miles, this is an absolute no-brainer for a morning or afternoon out. Canterbury's close enough for a cultural break, but Reculver works best when you want wind, space, and a proper chunk of Kent's disappearing coastline.
