Recreation Ground

Just outside Bridport, the Recreation Ground is a proper local nature reserve that punches above its weight for a quick morning ramble. It's the sort of place where you'll spot butterflies dancing between wildflowers rather than queuing behind tour groups, and that's rather the appeal.

The reserve itself is modest in scale - you're looking at maybe an hour to explore the paths thoroughly without rushing. The main draw is the mix of grassland and woodland habitats, which means there's genuine variety underfoot. Spring and early summer are when it really comes alive; visit then and you'll see why locals rate it. Autumn brings a different character, all golden light filtering through the trees.

It works brilliantly if you're staying at any of the nearby holiday parks - Highlands End, West Bay, or Freshwater Beach are all within spitting distance. You can combine it with a coastal walk over to West Bay's famous cliffs, which sit just down the road. Family groups with young children will manage it fine; it's not demanding terrain, though wellies are sensible after rain.

The whole setup is wonderfully unpretentious. Free access, no visitor centre, just a local green space doing its job properly. Don't expect dramatic vistas or adrenaline - that's not what this is. Come instead for a gentle wander, a breath of fresh air, and the chance to spot whatever wildlife has settled in that morning. It's the kind of place that rewards actually paying attention.
