Ray Mill Island

The Thames splinters around Ray Mill Island just outside Maidenhead, creating one of those unexpected riverside spots that locals know better than visitors. It's a proper little wedge of land squeezed between two channels of the river, accessible via footbridge and best explored on foot rather than by car - there's nowhere to park right on it.

What you get is a peaceful walk along the water's edge, with views back towards Maidenhead town and the surrounding countryside. The island itself is quiet, green, and feels genuinely removed from the main drag despite being minutes from civilization. It's the sort of place where you'll spot fishermen and the occasional dog walker but rarely crowds. The Thames Path runs through here, so it connects well with longer riverside walks if you fancy stretching your legs further.

Walkers will get the most from it, particularly those doing the longer Thames Path route. Families with young kids might spend 20 minutes here - it's pleasant rather than gripping. History buffs won't find much to dig into; this is about the river and the landscape rather than heritage attractions.

If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Amerden, Queens Acre, or Hurleyford Farm are all within easy reach - Ray Mill Island works as a gentle half-hour diversion between other activities. Free to visit, no facilities to speak of. Go when the weather's decent; there's nothing to shelter under, and muddy banks aren't especially inviting in wet conditions.
