Ravengill Dod

The walk up Ravengill Dod is proper straightforward - nothing technical, just a decent hill outside Biggar that rewards you with the kind of view that makes the slog worthwhile. You're looking across the Lowlands in all directions, rolling farmland and distant hills stretching away, and on a clear day you can pick out landmarks for miles.

It's a walker's hill, no messing about. The sort of place where you spend a couple of hours maximum, including the views at the top. The ascent is steady rather than steep, which means families with older kids won't struggle, though younger ones might find it a bit dull - there's no scrambling or drama, just boots and legs doing their job.

Timing-wise, an early start gives you the best chance of clear skies, particularly in spring and autumn when the weather patterns are more predictable. Summer brings longer daylight but also the higher chance of haze that'll flatten the distance.

If you're staying at Mount View Caravan Park just down the road, Ravengill Dod makes a cracking morning out before breakfast cools. It's the sort of walk that fits naturally into a Lowlands circuit - close enough to base that you're not burning half your day driving, but far enough that you feel like you've actually been somewhere. Nothing fancy, but honest hill walking.
