Ramsdown Copse

Ancient woodland stretches across rolling hills just south of Newport, where Ramsdown Copse offers proper countryside walking without the crowds that plague the island's coastal paths. This substantial block of mixed woodland feels wonderfully wild, with well-worn tracks winding through oak, ash and beech trees that have stood here for centuries.

Dog walkers and families after a gentle ramble will find plenty to explore. The paths aren't particularly challenging - mostly level ground with the odd gentle slope - making it suitable for pushchairs on the main routes. Children love spotting red squirrels darting between branches, though you'll need patience and a bit of luck.

What strikes you most is the quiet. Even on busy summer weekends, you can walk for twenty minutes without seeing another soul. The copse connects to wider footpath networks, so serious walkers can easily spend half a day here linking up with surrounding farmland and villages.

Access appears to be free, though parking can be tricky - you'll likely need to find roadside spots near the woodland edges. Early morning or late afternoon visits work best, both for wildlife spotting and finding somewhere to leave the car. It's a lovely addition to any Isle of Wight holiday, particularly if you're staying at one of the nearby campsites like Warren Hill Camp or Windmill Campersite.
