Ramsbury Corner

A couple of grass-covered mounds on farmland near Thatcham don't sound thrilling, but Ramsbury Corner is genuinely worth a detour if you're into Anglo-Saxon history. This is where archaeologists found evidence of a major settlement dating back to the 7th century - pottery shards, metalwork, the lot. The site itself is fairly modest to walk around; you're looking at maybe thirty minutes if you're taking it seriously, less if you just want to say you've been there.

It's the sort of place that appeals to history buffs and walking types more than families with restless kids, though if your children are already interested in how people lived over a thousand years ago, they might find it engaging. The surrounding countryside is pleasant enough for a wander, and you can puzzle out the earthworks without needing a guide.

Access and timing aren't straightforward - contact the landowner through Thatcham tourist information before you go. It's free to visit, which helps, but don't expect facilities or interpretation boards. If you're staying at Rhodeside Caravan Club or Cherry Bird Country Park nearby, it makes sense to include on an afternoon's circular walk. On its own, though, it's more of a specialist interest than a headline attraction. Worth the detour only if Anglo-Saxon settlements genuinely excite you.
