Rampion Offshore Wind Farm Visitor Centre

You can actually see Rampion's turbines spinning out in the English Channel from Brighton's seafront, which is rather brilliant - 116 of them, each one taller than the London Eye. The visitor centre itself sits in Brighton and gives you the proper technical lowdown on how offshore wind farms work, complete with interactive displays that explain the engineering without making your eyes glaze over.

It's genuinely interesting if you care about renewable energy or you're curious how these massive things actually function. The centre walks you through everything from installation to grid connection, and there are enough hands-on bits to keep teenagers engaged for an hour or so. Younger kids might find it a touch dry unless they're already into that sort of thing, to be honest.

The space is free to visit and opens 10am to 4pm, so it slots nicely between a morning swim at Brighton Beach and an afternoon pint somewhere in the Lanes. Allow 60 to 90 minutes if you read everything. If you're camping nearby - and there are several decent sites within three miles like Brighton Caravan and Motorhome Club - it's worth a rainy-day visit. On a clear day, though, you're better off heading down to the promenade itself and spotting the turbines on the horizon. That's when it really clicks into place.
