About Rake Law
The ascent is steady rather than brutal. Ground can get boggy after rain, so wellies aren't a terrible idea even though it feels like nothing much. The landscape shifts as you go up - rough grassland gives way to moorland, and the wind picks up properly once you clear the lower slopes. On a clear day you can see Tinto Hill over towards Lanark, which helps you clock your position.
This works well for families who can manage a reasonable walk and want something less serious than Ben Lomond or the Southern Uplands proper. Older kids do fine with it. Allow ninety minutes for the round trip if you're not rushing. Early morning or late afternoon light is lovely here - the low angle catches the contours of the hills nicely.
Coupled with Mount View Caravan Park just five miles away near Biggar, Rake Law makes a solid half-day excursion from a holiday base. It's the sort of walk locals do without fuss, which is rather the point. No coffee van at the top, no facilities, just a hill and a decent view. Free, obviously.
