Ragmoor Copse

Walk into Ragmoor Copse and you'll find yourself among proper old woodland - the kind of place where the canopy is so thick it stays cool even on roasting summer afternoons. It's a small forest patch just outside Wokingham, close enough to Reading that you could make it part of a broader day out without much faffing about.

The appeal here is straightforward: peaceful woodland trails where you won't bump into crowds. Dog walkers absolutely love it, and families with younger kids find it manageable because there's no pressure to trek for miles. The paths wind through mature trees with enough undergrowth to feel proper wild, though it's never remote enough to feel dodgy. You're looking at maybe 30 to 45 minutes to do the loop depending on how often you stop to look at birds or let kids poke about.

It works brilliantly if you're staying at Wellington Country Park just down the road - that's a cracking spot for a week and Ragmoor Copse fills an afternoon slot perfectly. The whole area around Wokingham has good walking potential, so you could easily layer it into something bigger.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared with drinks. Admission appears to be free, which makes it a no-brainer detour rather than a standalone destination. Honestly, if you're passing through Berkshire and want 40 minutes of actual woodland rather than manicured park paths, this delivers. Not spectacular, but properly restorative.
