RAF Metheringham Memorial

The airfield at Metheringham has been left to nature, and it's a genuinely moving spot if you know what you're looking at. The RAF station was operational during the Second World War, and now the runways and dispersal areas have become a nature reserve - grass and wildflowers reclaiming what was once a hive of military activity. You can walk the old perimeter tracks and actually stand on the concrete where Lancaster bombers took off on dangerous runs. It's not flashy. There are no visitor centres or interpretation boards screaming at you. What you get instead is space, silence, and the chance to think about what happened here seventy-odd years ago. History enthusiasts and anyone with a connection to the war will find this properly absorbing. Walkers too - the flat terrain and open views across the Lincolnshire countryside make for pleasant, contemplative rambles. Families with younger children might lose interest after twenty minutes unless you frame it as a treasure hunt for wartime remnants. The memorial itself is modest but sincere. Free access, no facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water and decent shoes. Allow an hour or two depending on how slowly you like to move through things. It works brilliantly as part of a broader Lincolnshire trip - Lincoln itself is just a few miles away - and sits nicely alongside time at Jubilee Park or Woodhall Country Park if you're staying at one of the holiday parks in the area. The whole region has this buried wartime story running through it, and Metheringham is where you can actually walk it.
