Southrey Wood

The woods around Southrey, just south of Lincoln, are the sort of place you wander into without much fanfare and leave wondering why you didn't come sooner. It's proper woodland - the kind with decent paths, mature trees, and enough space to actually feel like you've escaped rather than just stepped into a glorified park. The walking here is straightforward and undemanding, which means families with younger legs won't struggle, but it's rewarding enough that adults won't feel like they're just babysitting.

You'll find yourself among a mix of broadleaf and conifer trees, with paths that fork and reconnect in ways that make even a short stroll feel like an adventure. The undergrowth is thick enough in places to feel genuinely woodland-like, and if you time it right - spring for the bluebells, autumn for the colours - it's really rather lovely. Allow an hour or so for a decent walk without feeling rushed.

This works brilliantly as part of a wider exploration of the area. You're close enough to Lincoln to make it a morning outing before heading to the city proper, and the surrounding campsites - Treetop Hideaways and Woodhall Country Park are both within five miles - make it an ideal spot for caravan and camping holidays where you want something real to do rather than just sitting on site. It's not a dramatic destination, but that's rather the point. Sometimes the best walks are the ones without Instagram-worthy peaks.
