RAF Bradwell Bay Preservation Group

Cold War bunkers and forgotten airstrips don't get much more atmospheric than this. The old RAF Bradwell Bay site, just east of Southminster, preserves what remains of a wartime airfield that once defended Britain's east coast. Today, the volunteer-run museum tells the story of the squadrons who flew from here during the Second World War and into the Cold War era.

Inside the restored buildings, you'll find aircraft memorabilia, photographs, and personal accounts from the men and women who served here. The star attraction is the chance to explore an original operations room, complete with plotting tables and period equipment. It's proper hands-on stuff - no glass cases keeping you at arm's length.

History enthusiasts will love the detail, though families with young children might find it a bit specialist. The volunteers are tremendously knowledgeable and clearly passionate about keeping these stories alive. Allow a couple of hours if you want to chat with them properly.

Open weekends only from May through September, which makes it a decent rainy-day option if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like West Mersea or Coopers Beach. The location feels wonderfully remote - you really get a sense of how isolated these airfields must have felt during wartime. Well worth the short drive if military history is your thing.
