Bradwell Beach

The shingle beach at Bradwell stretches out toward the Thames estuary in that flat, windswept way Essex does so well. There's not much fancy here - no arcades, no beach huts, just a long sweep of grey pebbles and the kind of wide sky that makes you feel properly small. The real draw is the isolation. You'll walk for ages without bumping into crowds, and on a clear day the views across the water toward Southend are genuinely impressive.

It's a walker's beach, primarily. The shingle isn't comfortable for lounging about, and there's no facilities to speak of, so you need to come prepared. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited unless they're the type who enjoy serious beach combing. The appeal lies in the space to breathe and the chance to see the Thames estuary landscape properly - pylons, sea walls, the industrial sprawl in the distance. There's something honest about it.

Parking is straightforward at Bradwell itself, and it won't cost you a penny. Allow an hour or two depending on how far you fancy walking. The nearby holiday parks - Eastland Meadows Country Park sits just over a mile away - make this a natural stop during a wider Essex coast break. Combine it with West Mersea's beaches or Waldegraves Holiday Park's quieter corner if you're staying in the area for a few days. Bradwell works best when the wind isn't cutting you in half, so aim for summer or early autumn.
