Dengie National Nature Reserve

Mudflats stretch for miles here, broken only by creeks that snake silver through the saltmarsh at high tide. The Dengie Peninsula feels properly remote - this is Essex at its wildest, where Brent geese arrive in their thousands each winter and grey seals haul out on the mudbanks. You're looking at one of England's most important wintering grounds for wading birds.

Birdwatchers will have a field day, especially between October and March when the reserve comes alive with dunlin, knot, and redshank. The walking can be tough going - wellies essential if you venture onto the saltmarsh paths. Families with young children might find it hard work, but older kids who don't mind getting muddy will love the wildness of it all.

Southminster sits just inland, making this reserve easily accessible from several holiday parks in the area. West Mersea Holiday Park and Waldegraves Holiday Park are both within striking distance, perfect for a morning's exploration before heading back for lunch. The reserve works brilliantly as part of a longer Essex coast exploration - you could easily combine it with Mersea Island for a proper day out.

Come prepared for changeable weather and bring binoculars if you have them. The vast skies and endless mudflats create something genuinely special when the light's right.
