Rabbit Warren, dun site

A Bronze Age hill fort sits quietly on the edge of Castle Douglas, waiting for anyone curious enough to seek it out. Rabbit Warren isn't dramatic or heavily excavated - it's the sort of archaeological site where you're doing some of the interpretive work yourself, reading the landscape rather than following a marked trail.

The site consists of concentric defensive banks and ditches dating back around 3,000 years. Standing on the earthworks gives you a genuine sense of why someone built here: good views across the surrounding land, defensible position, control of movement through the valleys. It's the kind of thing that speaks to walkers and archaeology enthusiasts far more than casual visitors.

There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards worth mentioning, and no facilities. You'll need to ask locally for exact access details - it's not one of those attractions with a visitor website or formal opening hours. That actually works in its favour if you're after something genuine and undeveloped. Allow 45 minutes to an hour to properly walk the earthworks and take in the views.

If you're staying at Loch Ken Holiday Park just down the road, this makes a decent morning walk before heading elsewhere. It's not a showpiece attraction that'll fill a day, but it's proper archaeology on the ground, not behind glass. History types and serious walkers will find it worthwhile; younger children will probably lose interest after the initial scramble.
