Quoile Yacht Club

The Quoile River slips quietly through Downpatrick before it opens into a broad tidal basin, and that's where you'll find the yacht club - a working sailing venue that's been going for decades. It's not a tourist attraction in the traditional sense; this is proper sailing territory where locals launch dinghies and keelboats, and the clubhouse does what clubhouse do: serves tea, hosts racing events, and occasionally welcomes visitors who actually want to watch or participate.

If you're a sailor yourself, it's worth ringing ahead to ask about temporary membership or guest racing. The basin is sheltered and tidal, so conditions vary considerably throughout the day - something the regulars know intimately. For non-sailors, there's limited appeal unless you enjoy watching boats potter about or you're keen on waterside walks. The riverside setting is pleasant enough, and Downpatrick itself sits just inland with decent cafes and the medieval Downpatrick Cathedral nearby if you need to fill an afternoon.

Staying at Delamont Country Park, barely a mile away, makes this a convenient stop if you're sailing minded, but it's not a reason to base yourself in the area alone. Castle Ward Caravan Park, four miles south, offers more parkland activities and coastal access - probably a better choice for a proper holiday. The yacht club works best as a quick visit en route somewhere else, or as a home base if you're actually on the water.
