Quarts Moor(National Trust)

High moorland in Somerset that actually delivers on the promise of open skies and proper walking country. Quarts Moor is the sort of place you'd stumble across by accident, realize you've got something genuinely wild on your doorstep, and wonder why you haven't been before.

It's National Trust land, which means well-maintained paths without the crowds you'd get at the honeypot attractions. The moor itself is heathland - gorse and bracken mostly - with views that stretch toward the Quantock Hills and Brendon Hills depending on the weather. On a clear day it's genuinely worth the drive from Taunton, about twenty minutes away. On a misty one, it's moody and atmospheric in a way that proper appeals to walkers who want atmosphere over instagram moments.

Bring boots that don't mind mud. It's free, naturally, being National Trust moorland. Allow at least two hours if you're doing a decent walk, though you can potter about for an hour and still feel like you've had an outing. Families with older kids who aren't expecting theme parks will do fine here - toddlers less so, given the terrain.

If you're based at Holly Bush Caravan Park or Cornish Farm Touring Park nearby, this is exactly the sort of place that justifies staying in the area rather than driving to Exmoor or Devon. It's real walking country without the hype. The sort of morning out that makes a caravan holiday actually work.
