Staple Hill

The walk up Staple Hill rewards you with proper Somerset views the moment you crest the top. It's not a dramatic peak by any means - more of a steady climb through farmland and woodland that takes the best part of an hour depending on your fitness. The summit itself sits around 800 feet, which is enough to give you sight lines across the Quantock Hills and toward the coast on a clear day.

This is one for walkers and families who want a genuine outing without needing to commit half the day to it. Kids find it manageable, though the path can be muddy after rain and there's nowhere flat to stop for a breather halfway up, so pack snacks you can eat on the move. The real appeal is the isolation - you rarely see crowds here, even in peak season. It's the kind of walk where you get your own thoughts back.

Ashe Farm Caravan and Camping Site sits nearest at just over four miles away, making this a natural morning walk if you're based there. Holly Bush Caravan Park, only 1.3 miles off, is close enough for an evening stroll if the light holds. Taunton itself is the nearest proper town for supplies, around six miles south. Head up in late afternoon when the sun's lower - the light across the Somerset levels is worth timing for. Free to access, and you'll want to allow two to two and a half hours return. Don't expect a summit building or any facilities up top. Bring water.
