QE II Country Park (south)

The southern section of QE II Country Park sits on the edge of Ashington and makes for a proper dose of Northumberland nature without needing to venture into the wilds. It's a working landscape - old colliery land that's been allowed to rewild itself - so you get a mix of woodland, grassland, and water features that feel honest rather than manicured.

Walkers will find the most to do here. There are decent trails threading through, and the wetland areas mean you'll spot water birds if you time it right. It's not dramatic scenery - no peaks or valleys - but it has a quiet appeal. The kind of place where you notice things if you slow down: patches of wildflower, the way light hits the water, the birds calling in the trees. Takes a couple of hours to get a proper feel for it, depending on which routes you choose.

Families with young kids might find it a bit limited if the weather turns, but school-age children who can manage a walk without complaint will enjoy it. Birdwatchers should absolutely make the trip. Photographers will have a field day on a clear day.

It's free, which is brilliant. The park sits handily between Parkdean's Sandy Bay and Church Point holiday parks - both less than two miles away - making it perfect as a morning walk when you're based nearby. Parking and facilities are straightforward. Go early if you want the place to yourself.
